How can occupational therapy help?

When life feels overwhelming even the smallest tasks can seem like insurmountable challenges. Occupational therapy provides a guiding hand helping you to dissect these seemingly impossible hurdles into smaller more manageable steps. Occupational therapists equip you with practical skills, tailored strategies and a deeper understanding of your own abilities to create a life that truly works for you aligning with your individual needs goals and values.

Occupational therapists know that having a steady routine can really help with mental health, but we also understand that sticking to one can feel tough when you’re already feeling low or overwhelmed. That’s why we focus on creating small, realistic habits that fit naturally into your life, without adding pressure or feeling like just another thing on your to-do list.

Rather than handing you a strict schedule, we take the time to understand how your days already flow. Then, we look for simple ways to gently build in helpful routines that feel doable and supportive.

For example, if you’re having trouble sleeping, we might work with you to create a calming bedtime routine, something like reading a few pages of a book, sipping a warm drink or listening to soothing music. If mornings are hard, we might help you create a slower, more comforting start to the day, with space for self-care before anything else.

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about finding a rhythm that feels right for you. With a little structure, life can feel more manageable, less stressful and more supportive for your mental health in the long run.

Occupational therapists understand that what you do each day – your habits, routines and activities – can have a big impact on how you feel emotionally and mentally. There’s a strong connection between your daily life and your mood and we’re here to help you make sense of that.

Together, we can look at how certain activities, movement, and routines can help you feel more balanced, less stressed and better able to cope when things feel overwhelming. For example, if anxiety is something you struggle with, we might explore calming activities you can build into your day. Like spending time in nature, doing a relaxing craft or using soothing sensory tools. Gentle movement, like stretching or going for a walk, can also help release tension and lift your mood.

By noticing how your activities affect your emotions, we can work together to create simple, personalised strategies that help you feel more in control and better able to manage stress or anxiety when it shows up.

Occupational therapists are here to support people who are feeling low or struggling with depression. We know that when you’re feeling this way, even everyday tasks like getting out of bed or making a meal can feel overwhelming.

Our role is to help you gently reconnect with activities that feel meaningful and enjoyable. Things that give you a sense of purpose or help you feel more like yourself. Together, we’ll explore what matters to you and break things down into smaller, more manageable steps so they feel easier to tackle. Creating a daily routine or adding structure to your day can make a big difference, especially when motivation is low, and we’re here to help you find what works for you.

We also understand how important connection is. If you’re feeling isolated, we can support you to find safe and comfortable ways to reconnect with others and feel more supported.

The overall aim is to help you feel more engaged in life, improve your sense of wellbeing and find ways to move forward – even when things feel hard. For example, we might work on a simple morning routine like getting dressed and having breakfast or help you get back into a hobby you used to enjoy.

Occupational therapists can offer really helpful support for people who find it hard to manage big emotions. Emotional ups and downs can feel intense and overwhelming, and they can sometimes get in the way of everyday life and relationships.

We understand how tough this can be. We’re here to help you make sense of your emotions, recognise what sets them off and learn ways to cope with them in a way that feels more manageable. This might include using calming sensory tools, practising mindfulness or grounding techniques to stay present or learning practical coping strategies you can use when emotions start to feel too much.

The aim is to help you feel more in control of how you respond to your emotions so you can move through the day with more confidence, stay connected to the things that matter to you and feel less overwhelmed.

For example, if you often feel intense anger, an occupational therapist might help you learn how to spot the early signs and use calming techniques before things build up too much.

Occupational therapy offers gentle, step-by-step support to help you move through fear, anxiety or self-doubt at a pace that feels right for you. We’ll work together to figure out which situations or tasks feel overwhelming, and then create simple, practical ways to approach them without adding more stress.

Often, this means breaking things down into smaller, more manageable steps so they feel less scary and more doable. Over time, you can gradually build your confidence and feel more comfortable.

For example, if social situations make you anxious, we might start by practising short conversations in a calm, low-pressure setting. As your confidence grows, we can slowly work towards more challenging social situations, with the support and tools you need along the way.

This gradual approach – combined with learning helpful coping skills – can help you feel more in control, trust yourself more and take part in the activities and parts of life that matter most to you.

Occupational therapists understand that feeling well often comes down to finding the right balance in your daily life, between work, rest, fun, social time and taking care of yourself. When one area takes over and others get pushed aside, it can lead to stress, burnout or just feeling out of sync.

We’re here to help you take a step back and look at how you’re spending your time. Together, we can spot any areas that might be out of balance and find ways to gently adjust things so your days feel more manageable and meaningful.

It’s not about having everything perfectly balanced. It’s about creating a rhythm that works for you and supports your mental, physical and emotional wellbeing. That might mean adding in more enjoyable activities during the week, setting aside regular time to properly rest, or finding better ways to manage your workload so you don’t feel stretched too thin.

With a little support, we can help you shape a daily and weekly routine that feels more fulfilling and sustainable.

Why does Beyond Liminal exist?

It’s such a familiar feeling, isn’t it? That sense of being caught in the in-between. When life shifts and you’re not quite sure where you’re heading next. I’ve been there too. For me, it was while supporting someone close to me, trying to help them reconnect with the little moments that bring joy, purpose and a sense of self. At the time, I didn’t realise there was a name for what I was doing, I was simply following instinct.

It turns out, it was occupational therapy all along.

Discovering occupational therapy was a real turning point. It was a lightbulb moment. It gave words to something I already knew deep down: that reconnecting with what matters to us, even in small ways, has the power to ground us, heal us and move us forward. That realisation didn’t just help me through my own life transition, it sparked a deep passion to support others through theirs.

Now, I have the privilege of being part of a brilliant community mental health team, working alongside nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and support staff. Together, we support people navigating a wide range of challenges, from anxiety, depression, emotionally unstable personality disorder (EUPD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), through to neurodivergent conditions such as autism and ADHD.

I also know how difficult it can be to access the right mental health support when you need it most. Long waiting lists, complicated systems and not knowing where to turn can make things feel even harder. That’s a big part of why I’m so passionate about offering support that’s accessible, person-centred, and grounded in compassion. Because everyone deserves to feel seen, supported and empowered on their journey to better mental health.

What drives me is seeing people rediscover their spark, regain their sense of agency and take steps, however small, towards a life that feels more balanced, meaningful and authentically theirs. You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to start and I’m here to walk alongside you when you do.

In my everyday work, I empower people to regain control of their mental health by sharing practical strategies and tools that make a real difference. Together, we rebuild everyday routines that bring structure, confidence and a renewed sense of purpose. It’s about reconnecting with the roles and activities that truly matter, because when life feels aligned and meaningful, well-being naturally follows. Every person’s journey is unique and it’s a privilege to walk alongside them as they create lasting change.

I’m a firm believer in the power of occupational therapy to support mental well-being, and I’m passionate about making it more visible and accessible. Too often, people don’t realise how transformative it can be. That’s why I’m here. To shine a light on its potential and offer grounded, practical support that helps you move forward with clarity and confidence.

I’ve been through uncertain times too. Like many, I’ve faced moments of doubt and struggle. But coming through those experiences helped me connect more deeply with my values and my purpose. And that’s where real change begins.

At Beyond Liminal, I’m here to support you step beyond those in-between, uncertain spaces, to help you reconnect with your strengths, trust yourself and build a life that feels empowering, balanced and deeply meaningful.
